I immediately felt like UA could be my home away from home. I was excited to leave Kansas for the first time in my life, but at the same time nervous to leave the Midwest. Having the beautiful weather and incredible scenery was an added bonus!

What are your personal interests/hobbies?

I love to travel - I've been to 6 of the 7 continents and hope to be able to eventually say I have been to them all. Since med school limited my traveling ability, I picked up home brewing and am a huge fan of IPAs and pale ales. I also love most things outdoors and am glad to be back in a place where I can go out and explore. Snow is for skiing or snowboarding, not walking to work!

What are your professional interests?

I'm interested in International Medicine and disaster relief. I currently don’t know where I will be in my career in 10 years but we shall see where residency takes me.

Why did you choose UA EM?

Many reasons, the least of which is I wanted to come back home. I really like that UA offers the unique ability to work in both a county hospital and a big academic center. I think these types of experiences in residency are invaluable to exploring your future career goals.

Nothing like enjoying an ice cold beer while watching an Arizona sunset. Trust me, I have seen many and nothing comes close. Also Mexican food on every corner-can it get any better?

My wife and I enjoy taking trips to Ocean Beach in San Diego with our dogs to play on the beach. I've recently gotten into sketching still life (though, I'm a very untalented artist) and I'm trying to get back into climbing shape. Last, but definitely not least, I try to practice mindfulness and meditate regularly.

What are your professional interests?

Doing my best to provide compassionate care to all my patients and really being present during my interactions with patients and on shift. My current trajectory is likely community EM, though I love learning about and playing with ultrasound. I think it's such a diverse, useful tool.

What are your professional interests?

Pediatric EM, tropical medicine, global health.

Why did you choose UA EM?

After my interview here, I felt I would be challenged in ways I couldn't be in other places - forcing me to become a better physician by putting me outside of my comfort zone (e.g. pushing myself to learn Spanish for the border health opportunities). Also, Tucson presents some excellent outdoor opportunities.

What's your ideal vacation?

Long walks on the beach, moonlit dinners, bubble baths...

What are your non-medical goals during residency?

Become more of an adult - you know... learning how to cook as well as my folks (I'll settle for half as well), doing taxes, cleaning house, all the "fun" stuff.

So many! Backpacking, hiking, biking -gravel/road, mycology, birding, gardening (we’ll see how that goes), cooking, fermentation, and baking.

What are your professional interests?

Administration/Operations, Wilderness medicine, reducing corporate influence in medicine.

Why did you choose UA EM?

So many reasons! I loved the residents during our virtual interview day, which was a great start. My conversations with Dr. Stoneking were wonderful.  The opportunities to participate in tracks to focus my learning held a lot of appeal, and the chance to gain experience with medical Spanish will serve me well later on. I knew I wanted to be able to experience multiple clinical settings during residency, which in my opinion is one of the strongest aspects of our residency. The dual resources of both the university and Banner should make it possible to pursue all of my goals during residency - especially the ones I haven’t thought of yet!

Favorite activity in Tucson, or what attracted you to Tucson besides the residency program?

The proximity of mountains in Tucson is better than that of Cleveland, Ohio:) I love the opportunities to: bike most of the year; explore new ecosystems; improve my climbing; enjoy the incredible food scene; see the sun more than half the year; live in a reasonably-priced city.

What are your non-medical goals during residency?

Gain mild-moderate proficiency in Spanish, make new best friends, keep my previous best friends now that we live far apart, maintain moderate-high physical and mental health, see beautiful things in nature!

Riley Fisher, DO
Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences, College of Osteopathic Medicine

Where are you from?

Born and raised in Fairbanks, AK, but attended undergrad and medical school in Washington State.

What are your personal interests/hobbies?

Growing up in Alaska inspired a love for the outdoors, where bunny boots and full net mosquito suits are wardrobe staples. Whether it’s cross-country skiing, hiking, playing soccer or camping, I am reinvigorated when I’m outdoors being active. If I am lucky enough to do these activities with my family and a dog in tow, the time spent is invaluable.

Other things include, sampling local eats, wine and beer-tasting, reality TV (I’m not proud)—one hour is entertaining, two hours is detrimental, traveling, animals, yoga, painting, cooking, morning coffee, and Van Morrison.

What are your professional interests?

Pediatric Emergency Medicine; Medical Education; Global Health; Combatting disparities through education, policy/advocacy.

Why did you choose UA EM?

One of the few combined EM & Peds programs in the country. When I rotated through as a fourth year, everyone made me feel at home right away. I chose UofA because of its unparalleled diversity of clinical experiences, the ability to train at both a county hospital and an academic center, an underserved patient population, great faculty residents, and staff who are an impressive bunch and yet very down-to-earth, funny and warm. Most importantly, my interview with Dale Woolridge, who took me out for an obscene amount of wings and gave me some of his beer when my glass was empty.

What's your ideal vacation?

Somewhere beautiful and completely off the map with no cell phone service and by the water.

What are your non-medical goals during residency?

Travel, become fluent in Spanish, get my buns to the gym, kiddos, and to maintain a life balance.
