Why did you choose UA EM?
I absolutely loved Tucson when I interviewed here. The people, the atmosphere, the laid-back feel, the dedication to teaching/education from the staff was SUPER genuine, and literally everyone was talking about climbing, hiking, mountain biking, camping, being outdoors. I knew it was the place for me when the peds chief was talking about climbing in the morning before heading to work - super stoked to be here!
What's your ideal vacation?
Well I met someone this last year who has climbed the tallest mountain in every state, which I am totally copying because I think it is freaking sweet! So working towards the goal of visiting a new place and climbing to the tallest place in that state - 0 down, 50 to go (well maybe I've been to the top of Iowa or Kansas or something, but I wasn't aware at the time so I guess that doesn't count...).

A. I was lucky enough to work with a SC attending early on in my med school career and was continuously blown away by how an attending could be so genuinely invested in the future success of a little EM-aspiring med student :,) I think this level of dedication from faculty is hard to come by, but I experienced it over and over again with many of the SC attendings & residents which helped solidify my decision. Additionally I loved the rural health exposure, the medical spanish curriculum, and just how FUN the doc box was everytime I had a SC shift (plus the cool lights!). The vibes were just right, as the kids say

I love EM and am interested in Critical Care as well. The two dovetail nicely. I am also keen to work with Spanish speaking populations and improve my language skills, hopefully to fluency.
Why did you choose UA EM?
My wife was born in Tucson, and her mother lives here. I have been visiting Tucson for years now and fell in love with the city and AZ in general. It's big enough to have everything you need, but has a laid back vibe with true wilderness at your doorstep. In terms of training, UA is tough to beat. The city offers a broad spectrum of pathology due to the unique population (snowbirds, rural, urban). The faculty at UA are incredibly skilled as well as down to earth and approachable. I did an away rotation here during 4th year and fell in love, particularly with South Campus. It truly is the best of both worlds as it is a community program in an academic setting. The training environment really fosters independence. Finally, one of my life goals both inside and outside of medicine is to become fluent in Spanish. At only 60 miles north of the border, UA offers a great opportunity to immerse oneself. All in all, UA-South is one of the best and most well-rounded programs in the country.

Beyond that I love exploring new breweries, drinking craft beer, playing video games, eating good food, binging on Hulu/Netflix, and cooking to my heart's content.
What are your professional interests?
Education and LGBT advocacy/patient care.
Why did you choose UA EM?
The desert beckons you in! But really, the people here are fantastic, the program checked off every single one of my "boxes", and I felt like I belonged here on interview day. Also, Tucson has a weird and bohemian streak that reminds me of home (San Antonio), Tucson is UNESCO World City of Gastronomy, and I realized I didn't like cold winters after doing a surgical intern year in Boston.

Why did you choose UA EM?
The moment I came to the pre-interview dinner I had a good feeling about the South Campus EM program! I immediately felt welcomed and heard nothing but good things about the program from the current residents and faculty. That feeling continued to the interview. Not only does this program really care for their residents but they also care a lot for the community as well. Plus there are so many unique aspects to this program such as the rural med rotations, sharing some of your time between community and academic centers and much more!

Why did you choose UA EM?
Foremost, the people here are amazing and there is a phenomenal team environment across the entire program. We are given the unusual opportunity to work in three distinct environments – a busy county-style hospital, a large academic center, and a pediatric emergency department - that share faculty and EMR infrastructure. We get to do rural and global rotations, evolving off-service rotations based on resident feedback - I could go on and on - I feel incredibly lucky to be part of this program.
Favorite activity in Tucson?
Mountain biking followed by tacos.
What are your non-medical goals during residency?

Why did you choose UA EM?
There were a great number of reasons: friendly people, excellent training, combination of university and county-style experiences, fellowship expertise (faculty-trained and programs available), fantastic quality of living (weather and traffic), and distance to family.
