Why did you choose UA EM?

So many reasons- I was really drawn to the hybrid community/academic model and was so impressed with the leadership on interview day. It’s also a personal and professional goal of mine to be comfortable speaking Spanish with patients, so longitudinal language curriculum was a huge draw. The welcoming, cohesive group of residents really made me feel at home here.

Favorite activity in Tucson, or what attracted you to Tucson besides the residency program?

My significant other is from Tucson, so I was early convert to the beauty of this desert. There is a lot to love about 350 days of sunshine, endless trails to explore and the magic of a monsoon. Maybe it’s the Sonoran sunset talking, but I’m convinced that the margaritas here are some of the best in the world.

What are your non-medical goals during residency?

Ski Mount Lemmon! But in all seriousness, I’m committed to speaking more Spanish, learning to grow a desert garden and spending some time at the pottery wheel.

John Rolshoven, MD

Reno, Nevada

What are your personal interests/hobbies?

Anything going uphill and back down: skiing, mountain biking, rock climbing, trail running with the pup, and surfing.  I love traveling the world by bicycle, meeting weird people, eating snacks in cool places, getting stuck in storms, and dancing around the fire with friends and family.

What are your professional interests?

Medical education, wilderness medicine, and sports medicine.

Why did you choose UA EM?

I was looking for a program that combines community/county and academic environments, sees a significant volume of underserved and Spanish-speaking patients, has opportunities for subspecialty tracts, and has a supportive and fun group of faculty and residents. I loved the family feel of a smaller program with unopposed learning opportunities that is part of a large academic program and Dr. Stoneking as PD sealed the deal! Training in a location with good access to mountains and trails was essential, so UA EM was the perfect fit for all the above. Plus- my wife, Leanne, is starting veterinary school in Tucson at the same time, so heading down for some SW desert sun seemed like the perfect choice.

Favorite activity in Tucson, or what attracted you to Tucson besides the residency program?

Endless single-track, awesome climbing, ability to bicycle commute, a smaller and affordable big city, and a unique SW vibe.

What are your non-medical goals during residency?

Race mountain bikes, break into a new climbing grade, have a garden, make lots of great friends, have lots of dinner parties, and still get some skiing in. Also, learn how to survive in 110+ degrees.

Why did you choose UA EM?

Everyone I met on my interview day, from the residents to the faculty were the most welcoming I met on the entire interview trail. UA seemed to have the perfect hybrid academic/county/community feel. Plus after several decades of living in the Midwest, I couldn’t be happier to move somewhere that actually has some elevation changes.

From the time I began medical school, I have heard amazing things about the program, people, and community. The commitment of the residency to focus on Spanish and serving the Hispanic and Native American communities had significant appeal to me.

Being from Southern California, the dessert always has felt like home. You can't beat the outdoor activities in Tucson either. My wife and I are stoked to hit the trails here and soak up the sun. Oh, and you can't leave out the awesome food scene here, too. I'm excited to eat my weight in tacos.

Why did you choose UA EM?

The UA EM program is essentially the complete package and where I knew I would be the happiest. UA was the interview where the people and program culture stood out the most. The residents are engaging, fun, and interesting. The program boasts a great reputation due to amazing faculty committed to resident education, a comprehensive curriculum, and numerous fellowship opportunities. There is emphasis on resident support and wellness. The balance between the University and South campus offers unique and diversified patient experiences. Oh, and most importantly, a food allowance! Beyond the program, if you can handle (and ideally, embrace) the heat, there is so much to love about Arizona, Tucson, the Sonoran desert and outdoor opportunities, and southwest culture as a whole. Finally, I couldn't beat being home with family and friends, and becoming a Wildcat again was a major perk.

What's your ideal vacation?

Anywhere a bit off the beaten path that has a blend of history/art/architecture, a balance between mountains and beaches, great food and drink, and of course, world-class climbing. Next on the list is climbing the Mediterranean coast from France to Greece, or simply exploring more of America's national parks.

What are your non-medical goals during residency?

Break into a new climbing grade, establish and record the first ascent on a new route on Mt. Lemmon, road bike to the summit of Mt. Lemmon, adopt and train the ultimate outdoor pup, experiment more with cooking, learn to play guitar (did someone say Wonderwall?), and improve my Spanish.

Being from France, my openness to relocating anywhere in the U.S. guided me to seek a residency program that would align with both my professional ambitions and my family's needs. It was essential to find a program in a large city that offered diverse clinical experiences yet was close to nature and had a welcoming community environment. Tucson, Arizona, quickly emerged as the ideal location for my Emergency Medicine residency. I was particularly attracted to Tucson's robust clinical exposure and its strong commitment to community-focused healthcare, not to mention, the breathtaking mountain view. The city's dynamic medical community presents a wide array of patient demographics and complex medical cases, ensuring that my training in acute care would be comprehensive.
