Cabin John, MD

What are your personal interests/hobbies?

Hiking, camping, playing soccer, and trying to understand how Formula 1 works.

What are your professional interests?

EMS, serving medically underserved communities

Why did you choose UA EM?

During my second look, every resident was excited to talk about the program and the area, but also super easygoing and approachable. Also, the different campuses offer the opportunity to learn in an academic and community center.

Favorite activity in Tucson, or what attracted you to Tucson besides the residency program?

Tucson has incredible mountains with plenty to do outdoors.

What are your non-medical goals during residency?

I hope to focus on health and stay active, value time with family, and convince myself that it’s a responsible decision to get a dog (featured dog is unfortunately not mine).

Mattie Lencinas
The University of Arizona

Where are you from?

I grew up in Yuma, Arizona, but if I go home, it's to Dillingham, Alaska.

What are your personal interests/hobbies?

I love traveling, hiking, camping, hunting, working out, cooking, and spending time with my husband and two stepchildren.

What are your professional interests?

I'm interested in so many aspects of emergency medicine - rural EM and the amazing learning that happens rurally, ultrasound, international medicine, and teaching. I enjoy working with underserved populations and hope to become even better at Spanish, hopefully, to be fluent.

Why did you choose UA EM?

The people are what ultimately led me to choose UA South Campus EM. The residents I'd met were so wonderful - and happy! Nowhere else could residents tell me they would miss residency and how much they enjoyed it but felt ready for what comes after. I felt like whichever path in emergency medicine I want to take, there will be mentors and support that will guide me there. I love the variety of patients to see at both Main Campus and South Campus. The opportunities for learning in a rural ED are unparalleled and the longitudinal medical Spanish learning helped sell it, too.

Favorite activity in Tucson?

I love that I can drive in any direction and will find mountains to hike and camp in. I also love eating the best tacos and Sonoran hot dogs that can be found.

What are your non-medical goals during residency?

I hope to strike the elusive "work-life balance." There are still a few national parks in the Southwest I'd like to visit and would love to spend some time on a few tropical beaches. I hope to make a trip to my husband's home country of Bolivia.

What are your professional interests?

I have a wide range of interests and can’t wait to find my niche in residency. I am interested in military medicine, sports medicine, medical Spanish, and clinical research.

Why did you choose UA EM?

I felt as if UA SC EM was the best fit from the start, with its supportive, close-knit environment, excellent reputation, and a mix of community and academic medicine. After speaking with faculty, the dedication to resident education was clear. I’m also excited about the opportunity to learn medical Spanish during training!

Mountain biking and climbing on Mt. Lemmon, wandering in the desert and thinking about how every plant looks like it's from a Dr. Seuss book.

What are your non-medical goals during residency?

1) Mountain bike the entire Lemmon Drop trail without breaking anything 2) Identify every gecko and desert plant in my backyard 3) Buy a pair of cowboy boots and learn to two-step like a boss in a Tucson country bar!

I love learning about toxicology, but I dream of a residency program being established in my home state so I could be involved in resident education and still be close to family.

Why did you choose UA EM?

It has everything I wanted and didn’t know I wanted in a residency program.  Mix of academic and community experience, supportive administration, high caliber faculty with highly specialized knowledge base. And Tucson! What an incredible place!

Jose Lopez-Rubio, MD

What are your professional interests?

I have an interest in Wilderness medicine because of my background and upbringing. I love ultrasound and think that it's awesome how the tool is so dependent on your technical skills. I am looking forward to experiencing more teaching as it was something I started to enjoy very much during my fourth year of medical school.

Why did you choose UA EM?

I thought the addition of border medicine was a unique opportunity that most other residencies lacked. Being Mexican-American, this population is near and dear to my heart. I have also had the fortune to work with grads of the program and was impressed by their knowledge and abilities. My wife and I couples matched and we were both ready to get out of the snow and get back in the glorious oven that is the southwest.

Favorite activity in Tucson, or what attracted you to Tucson besides the residency program?

The combination of small town feel with larger city amenities was a nice middle ground. I look forward to enjoying the variety of biomes that are available with relatively short drives from Tucson.

I am an Iowa native from the big city of Norwalk, Iowa.

What are your personal interests/hobbies?

I am an adventurous soul! I love traveling, exploring culture, making new friends, eating all the foods, embracing Mother Nature's gifts via hiking/backpacking, and of course, discovering good wines and beers! I also enjoy sports and am slightly an adrenaline junky. But my number one hobby is spending time with my big family (see photo), boyfriend, friends and pets. So whenever I'm doing any of the above, I always have company. :)

What are your professional interests?

International Medicine & Wilderness Medicine

Why did you choose UA EM?

One word, with two meanings: Family. Though I'm a small town Iowa gal, my family moved to Phoenix 6 years ago. Training at a solid program where I could remain close was really important to me. When I attended my interview at UofA it was overwhelming how at home I felt. The residents and staff were so easy to talk to, supportive, and enthusiastic. I knew immediately I found a new family, and they welcomed me with open arms.

What's your ideal vacation?

Backpacking through a forested mountain range filled with wildlife. Ideally, there's also a beautiful lake and a few waterfalls sprinkled along the way. Then maybe there's also access to an ocean where we can snorkel colorful reefs, eat fresh seafood and enjoy tropical cocktails with the locals.

What are your non-medical goals during residency?

I am determined to become fluent in Spanish!

What's your ideal vacation?

Any place that includes a combination of relaxation with the beautiful outdoors.

What are your non-medical goals during residency?

Go to all 50 US states (I’m only missing 7), keep the potted citrus trees in my backyard alive long enough to grow fruit, and explore Arizona.

Travis Martin, MD

Born and Raised in Southern California. The military sent me out to the Midwest in 2009, and eventually I completed Medical School in 2019 from the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

I also enjoy cooking, and consider myself a bit of an amateur Grillmaster.

What are your professional interests?

Veteran Care and Outreach, Sports Medicine, and Global Health

Why did you choose UA EM?

My primary goal on the interview trail was to find a program that felt like family. As a military veteran, I became accustomed to the tight knit camaraderie that I formed with my coworkers overseas. From the beginning of my interview day at UA, I felt like I'd found that again. Everyone was so comfortable, respectful, and just seemed to have fun. I saw wellness and people that seemed to thoroughly enjoy each others company! To me UA felt like somewhere I could call home. However, if that wasn't enough, I soon fell in love with the opportunities that the program offered. It was a rarity to find such a large and diverse patient population that offered multiple training sites to give you a touch of everything in a 3-year program. Lastly, Tucson is just plain awesome.

What's your ideal vacation?

Me and 3 or 4 of my closest friends backpacking across a national park. And of course my dogs are invited.

What are your non-medical goals during residency?

Try to have time for a few home-cooked meals a week, keep in touch with my family and friends as best I can, and keep my dogs as happy as possible.

Why did you choose UA EM?

When I rotated through, everyone made me feel at home right away. And anytime I had talked with people in charge of hiring EM physicians they said graduates from UA are on everyone’s radar. I felt that by coming here I would get the best training, and would leave here with limitless options of where to go.

Addiction medicine, social EM, critical care, wilderness medicine

Why did you choose UA EM?

I loved my interview day experience! Even though it was virtual, my conversations with faculty and residents made me feel like they were people I could really connect with and receive the best support from during training. I also really liked the patient population UA SC serves and the longitudinal Medical Spanish curriculum. Overall the mission and culture of the program, along with its more rural/community focus, aligned really well with the way I hope to practice emergency medicine.

Favorite activity in Tucson, or what attracted you to Tucson besides the residency program?

Ryan Miller
The University of Arizona College of Medicine

Where are you from?

Phoenix, AZ.

What are your personal interests/hobbies?

I used to be cool and do cool things, but since having two beautiful daughters I spend most of my free time doing dad things- by which I mean being the bad guy in fairy princess games and complaining about my joints aching and always being tired.

What are your professional interests?

My goals for future Dr. Ryan are to be competent, fast, appropriately narrow in testing and treatment, and exceptional in communication with both patients and colleagues. Moreover, I hope to become conversational in Spanish, or at least more competent than my current practice of pointing at body parts and yelling ¿Dolor? at patients.

Why did you choose UA EM?

First and absolutely foremost, the people. This program has excellent role models for applicants looking to work in private practice AND those with academic aspirations. Moreover, working with underserved populations incredibly rewarding for me. Also the longitudinal medical Spanish teaching was huge selling point. I just got back from learning Spanish in Guatemala, sponsored by the program!

What's your ideal vacation?

Mount Lemmon is awesome. No matter the time of year, you just drive up the mountain until the weather is nice, and stop there for a hike/ride/camp.

What are your non-medical goals during residency?

All right EM residency applicant. You are the only folks who read these (as I did) so instead of droning on about my life I’ll try to relate to you. As you fly around the country just trying to remember what state you’re currently in, you’ll be staying up irresponsibly late the night before an interview hurriedly researching the program. Every program, every single one, asks the question “why our program.” And you’ll unfortunately have to come up with a better answer than “because I want to be a doctor and you happen to be hiring.” Know that UA at South Campus is a very special program. I can’t think of another program that offers residents the opportunity to work in a county-style ED, a large academic ED, and a Peds ED that share the same attending staff and EMR. South campus is a hospital with amazing, caring, collegial staff from Program direction to paramedics. Pro tip- if you want to do a rotation here, be proactive in contacting our med student program coordinator (currently Kristina Waters) EARLY in the VSAS season. Good luck and God bless you in your journey to be an EM doc. It really is the best job in the world.

Over 300 days a year of sunshine!

What are your non-medical goals during residency?

Make amazing friends, explore Arizona and the surrounding areas, and maybe find some new warm-weather hobbies! :)

Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine

Where are you from?

A. Corbett, Oregon

What are your personal interests/hobbies?

A. Running, Hiking, attempting and sometimes succeeding climbing mountains, dragging my dog on adventures, learning something new with friends, and exploring new towns through their food and coffee culture.

What are your professional interests?

A. Wilderness medicine, Pediatric emergency medicine, Rural medicine

Why did you choose UA EM?

A. I rotated in a smaller community hospital and I loved the tight knit community and vast opportunities to grow. I had been looking at programs in Arizona and, thanks to the high praise of several friends, when I discovered there was a community program with similar opportunities of a large academic institution it was hard to look away. Interview day (though virtual) at UA SC EM just sold me with how kind and inclusive staff and residents were. There was a sense of belonging and a found family that made me confident I could happily uproot myself from the Pacific Northwest and give living in the desert a go.

Favorite activity in Tucson, or what attracted you to Tucson besides the residency program?

A. I've actually never been to Tucson, but have had several friends speak of the endless opportunities to get outside and how beautiful the desert is. I can't wait to be able to run outside without fear of falling on ice, still have the chance to ski in the winter, and be surrounded my mountains. Besides, who can say no to the chance of sunshine, good food, and exploring a new environment?

What are your non-medical goals during residency?

A. To make sure my dog has the best life he can have, continue growing and keep my menagerie of plants alive, improve my spanish, and make some new friends along the way.

Patrick Mullett, MD
University of Nevada

Where are you from?

I grew up in Alaska, but have called Reno, Nevada home for the last decade.

What are your personal interests/hobbies?

Like any EM doc on shift, I am consistently distracted by 100 different things that demand my attention - like hiking big mountains, rock-climbing, alpine skiing, long-distance running, biking, playing team sports, brewing Kombucha, and basically anything new I can try. I most recently tried sailing and did not capsize! Long story short, I like to dabble in a little bit of everything - the more things outdoors, the better.

What are your professional interests?

Global Health, Wilderness medicine, and being the best physician I can be, no matter where I am or what I am doing. I want to leave a legacy of kindness, teamwork, compassion, and providing the best quality care to all patients. That, and I want to be fluent in Spanish by the time I graduate residency and travel around the world to practice medicine.

Why did you choose UA EM?

The people. Hands down, this program is what it is because of the incredible people here. There is a reason that Peter Rosen spent his final days hanging around this Emergency Medicine Department. To all interested residents-to-be, you should strongly consider this program if you want something truly unique, with the opportunity to not only work in an academic hospital, community hospital, and get plenty of exposure to pediatrics. At the South Campus, you will take weekly Spanish lessons and can become more than proficient in Spanish in 3 years if you are not already. When I was on Sub-I here, it was easy to notice that residents here are all incredibly good at what they do, but they are humble, and they were trusted by all faculty, nursing, and staff. Compared to other programs, it's easy for me to say the residents I saw here were well above the level of other residents in other programs. There was lots of laughter on every shift too. If you want to be an exceptional ER doctor and work amongst a family, then this is the place for you. This program is unlikely, any other - truly exceptional.

Favorite activity in Tucson, or what attracted you to Tucson besides the residency program?

The skiing. Just kidding, there is no good skiing here. Don't come here for the skiing... In truth, there are too many reasons to list as to why Tucson is an amazing place to live. The big ones that stick out are the culture, the laid-back people, and the great outdoors here are unbeatable.

What are your non-medical goals during residency?

What don't I want to do? I am going to try and fit in everything I can do in my free time here. Tucson is truly an incredible place with hundreds of activities. First, I plan on raising a brood of chickens and having a large garden in my backyard. Once I have a sustainable food source from my property, I would like to get my skipper's license and start sailing in my free time. I want to run an ultramarathon race at nighttime (because heat stroke is definitely going to happen in any day time race). There are also plenty of lakes nearby with good fishing, rocks to be climbed, and many co-residents who are going to want to mountain bike together - so, I guess it is time to get good at all those things! The possibilities are endless.

The program at UA is the absolute best. The faculty and residents are truly incredible and everyone feels like a family. The program also offers exposure to both community and academic medicine, as well as amazing opportunities to work with diverse patient populations.
