The opportunity to move to Tucson allowed me to be close to family while living in the same climate I grew up in. I am excited to explore the great food and culture in this city.

Why did you choose UA EM?

I chose UA EM for he same reason many people choose UAEM: the people. I feel that the individuals I will be trained by and training with are second to none. Not only are they immensely brilliant and compassionate people, but all of them are fun to be around and I know will make life easier when stressed out during Residency. Additionally, the Tucson population is one that has many opportunities wot impact the under-served and truly enact change within the community. Beyond that, the volume and types of disease processes as well as trauma seen at this program provide ample opportunity in combination with excellent training to become the Emergency Physician I want to be. I am so incredibly excited to be a part of this program, as well as stick around such a cool city for another 3 years!

Favorite activity in Tucson, or what attracted you to Tucson besides the residency program?

Tucson is such a unique city. In many ways, it feels more like a town, and things move more slowly here than in places like Phoenix. I feel the people are kind here and it very much feels like home. I love the opportunities to do outdoor activities, and Arizona as a whole is such a fun state to live in for adrenaline junkies like those that go in to EM. I love this city and the people in it!

What are your non-medical goals during residency?

I am planning to get back in to rock climbing, start learning to mountain bike and get my SCUBA certification!

The access to amazing outdoor recreation year round and the amazing culinary scene.

Growing up in the Pacific Northwest, I have come to love hiking, mountain biking, exploring new foods, and travel destinations. I am a huge podcast consumer often at double speed. Why did you choose UA EM?

I chose UAEM for its location, and for the diversity of training that I would experience. Additionally I liked the quality improvement processes that were going on here in Tucson.

The people without a doubt. Everyone I met affiliated with the program has made me feel like a part of the family since day one. Having experts in all areas of EM allow for many opportunities to explore one's interests. Also after 4 winters in Chicago the 350+ days of sunshine sounded like a nice change of pace.

I'm currently trying to eat my way through all the amazing restaurants in the city and that's a pretty attractive activity if you ask me.

What are your non-medical goals during residency?

Improve my outdoor climbing, better my Spanish, tell people not from here "it's a dry heat" when discussing the weather.

Kelsey Tunison, MD
University of Washington School of Medicine

Where are you from?

I was born and raised in Boise, ID, headed off to Virginia for college and then returned West to Seattle, WA for medical school. My “home base” throughout medical school was North Carolina where my other half was living, and now is Colorado where he has moved and where we own a home.

What are your personal interests/hobbies?

Mostly eating, drinking beer and sleeping. I also probably love my cat and my partner an uncomfortable amount. Don’t worry I like doing all of the other normal EM doc things too.

What are your professional interests?

This is embarrassing, but I kind of want to have a second job contracting as an EM doc with a government agency like the CIA or FBI on the side. I also want to become a boss with an ultrasound, not be afraid of sick children and to explore the field of critical care.

Why did you choose UA EM?

UA trained my most adored mentor and role model and had everything I was looking for in my training and more (volume, acuity, great pediatrics exposure, mixed clinical environment, diverse patient population, etc.). It was also the program that just felt like my “fit” even though it was my last (zoom) interview. I got off of all of the happy hours telling my guy “I just really want to be around these people.”

Favorite activity in Tucson, or what attracted you to Tucson besides the residency program?

I love sun, heat and desert scenery and from what I hear I think I am going to love the food, drink and nearby adventures that Tucson has to offer even more. The opportunity to relearn Spanish is also something I am very excited about.

What are your non-medical goals during residency?

My #1 goal is and always has been to maintain my health and relationships while giving my all to this career. I’d also love to become fluent in Spanish again, get better at shooting, take a bartending class and maybe inspire my partner to finally marry me. I should also probably buy sunscreen for the first time.

Adam Whiteley, MD
University of Washington School of Medicine

Where are you from?

Most recently from Bozeman, MT. Originally from Santa Barbara, CA.

What are your personal interests/hobbies?

My family. Playing golf and watching Dodgers baseball. Anything outdoors. Reading, watching (and quoting) movies, live music and listening to National Public Radio. I love doing projects around the house and have a 1966 Ford Mustang waiting for residency to be over to get the full restoration it deserves.

What are your professional interests?

EMS, austere medicine and ultrasound. Healthcare policy particularly with regards to climate change and LGBTQIA+ medicine.

Why did you choose UA EM?

Exceptional training, world renowned faculty, diversity of sites, and quality of life (culture, access to the outdoors, climate).

NOT having to shovel snow! (But really, probably the diversity and quality of food!)

Be present and engaged with my two daughters. Take my wife out for date nights. Immerse ourselves in the Tucson community and enjoy all that it, and the rest of Arizona, have to offer!
