Medical Toxicology Fellowship
Medical Toxicology within The University of Arizona Department of Emergency Medicine is committed to excellence in medical education, patient care, and scholarship. Our faculty physicians provide medical direction for the Arizona Poison and Drug Information Center and are available for bedside consultation at both Banner - University Medical Center South (BUMCS) and Banner - University Medical Center Tucson (BUMCT). We lead the required medical toxicology rotation for emergency medicine residents and are frequently asked to lecture locally, nationally, and internationally.
The Medical Toxicology Fellowship is a two-year program based at BUMCS campus, a 150-bed tertiary care hospital and Level 1 psychiatric facility with more than 48,000 emergency department visits annually. Medical toxicology also consults at BUMCT campus, the largest tertiary care hospital with more than 500 beds and the only Level I trauma center in Southern Arizona. Medical Toxicology has an out-patient clinic, Toxic Exposures Clinic, that serves both adults and children at BUMCS. Fellows will work closely with the Arizona Poison and Drug Information Center and the Toxic Exposures Clinic. The didactic curriculum includes lectures, conferences, and formal coursework at the UArizona Colleges of Medicine, Pharmacy, and Public Health. The didactic curriculum is based on the American Board of Emergency Medicine's 2021 Core Content of Medical Toxicology.
The board-certified medical toxicologists have held multiple leadership positions in the American Academy of Clinical Toxicology (AACT), the American College of Medical Toxicology (ACMT), the Medical Toxicology Subboard of the American Boards of Emergency Medicine, Preventive Medicine, and Pediatrics. We are committed to both education and research, with a special emphasis on envenomations, withdrawal, occupational exposures, and preparedness. The international headquarters for the Advanced Hazmat Life Support course is based here and is co-sponsored by the Arizona Emergency Medicine Research Center and the American Academy of Clinical Toxicology.
Our faculty members, Dr. Frank Walter, Dr. Farshad “Mazda” Shirazi, Dr. Robert French, Dr. Jaiva Larsen, Dr. Nicholas Hurst and Dr. Steven Dudley actively participate in a variety of research projects and have particular expertise in hazardous material, and occupational exposures, emergency management, envenomations, geriatrics, performance-enhancing agents, drug-drug interactions, and withdrawal. Additionally, we have medical toxicologists participate in treatment, calls, and teaching including:
