Dr. Acuña earned her medical degree from the University of Arizona and completed her Emergency Medicine residency training at Staten Island University Hospital. She subsequently completed a fellowship in Emergency Ultrasound at the University of Arizona. She currently serves as faculty for Emergency Medicine residency program at the University of Arizona, as well for the Emergency Ultrasound fellowship program. She has worked closely with the various colleges at the University of Arizona Health Sciences Campus lecturing on the use of bedside ultrasound, providing hands-ultrasound teaching sessions to students and has been involved in projects to integrate ultrasound education into the core curriculum. Dr. Acuña served as past chair of the Diversity and Inclusion committee for the College of Medicine and remains closely involved with the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. She has authored several manuscripts and book chapters in Emergency Ultrasound, and has lectured at national venues. She has also served on several national committees related to point-of-care ultrasound. Her most recent publications have focused on gender inclusion and diversity in academic medicine.
