Combined EM & Peds Residency - Class of 2026

Joshua Calton, MD
University of Arizona College of Medicine - Tucson

Where are you from?

Granite Bay, California

What are your personal interests/hobbies?

Playing sports and watching the Wildcats, hiking to my favorite camp sites and taking pictures along the way, drinking pour-over coffee and eating my weight in Mexican food, hanging out with friends and enjoying a movie night with my family.

What are your professional interests?

Global health and pediatric emergency medicine

Why did you choose UA EM?

I chose the combined Emergency Medicine & Pediatrics program at UA because I know the dual training will best prepare me to accomplish my career goals. I also love the University and the Tucson community, and appreciated the culture created by the residents/faculty during my rotations as a medical student.

Favorite activity in Tucson, or what attracted you to Tucson besides the residency program?

I love Tucson. I've lived here since 2011 when I moved here to attend UA for undergrad. Of all the great things about the city, I have to admit that my favorite is that it introduced me to my (now) wife in 2016.

What are your non-medical goals during residency?

Meet new people, try new food, travel to new places, and continue to be a present husband/father.

Jorrie Dykes, MD
University of Kansas School of Medicine

Where are you from?

Salina, Kansas

What are your personal interests/hobbies?

Being an aunt is certainly my favorite! I also love spending time outdoors. I'm hoping to spend time off hiking, biking, and exploring Arizona! Additionally, I love DIY projects, woodworking, furniture flipping, and home renovations.

What are your professional interests?

I am most interested in global health and rural medicine. I am hoping to return to my hometown in Kansas and practice both emergency medicine and full spectrum pediatrics with plans to also be involved in global medicine efforts.

Why did you choose UA EM?

I immediately felt like UA could be my home away from home. I was excited to leave Kansas for the first time in my life, but at the same time nervous to leave the Midwest. It was clear from day one that the residents here are family and that I would have support both inside and outside of the hospital. Having the beautiful weather and incredible scenery was an added bonus!

Favorite activity in Tucson, or what attracted you to Tucson besides the residency program?

Eating is at the top of my list, the food here is amazing. But a close second is being able to see the mountains from almost anywhere in the city.

What are your non-medical goals during residency?

I would love to travel around the Southwest, and possibly get into biking and climbing here in Tucson. I'm also hoping to spend more time reading fiction and trying to learn some basic Spanish!

Ashwini Kaveti, MD
University of Arizona College of Medicine - Tucson

Where are you from?

Phoenix, Arizona

What are your personal interests/hobbies?

Spending time with my family and friends. I love traveling, dancing, yoga, hiking, and am an aspiring rock climber. But when I don’t want to move around a lot, I enjoy napping, baking, trying new foods and drinks, and board games.

What are your professional interests?

I am interested in both emergency medicine and pediatrics, and would like to apply my training towards working with under-served populations. I am interested in working in global health, rural health, public health, and preventative care.

Why did you choose UA EM?

Because of the people. I remember many of the residents during interview season said the same thing and it has held true — the genuine care and support I feel by our faculty, residents, and staff is unmatched and was something I hoped to have during residency. I am a Wildcat through and through, completing both my undergrad and medical school at UA, and was ecstatic knowing that we are 1 of the 4 EM & Peds programs in the country so I could continue my training here! Apart from the people who make our programs, I wanted to be in a place where I could experience academic medicine, community medicine, and work with our under-served populations.

Favorite activity in Tucson, or what attracted you to Tucson besides the residency program?

Too many to list but I love hiking followed up with going to different restaurants and breweries around town with friends. Huge plus if they have trivia nights as well!

What are your non-medical goals during residency?

Build friendships with my amazing colleagues, buy and renovate a camper van for future trips, learn Salsa dancing, improve my Spanish, and hopefully get a dog.
