Five years ago, the Department of Emergency Medicine and the Division of Infectious Diseases began work on a way to make HIV screening a routine part of emergency department culture. After initial concerns by physicians over how it could be done, patients now receive unprecedented access to timely treatment.

People seek care at hospital emergency departments for all sorts of afflictions, be they heart attacks, asthma attacks, auto accidents, broken bones, food poisoning or flu. Others seek care because they fear they may have been exposed to HIV.
