Each year in March, fourth-year medical students anxiously await news about where they will spend the next three to eight years as resident-physicians, the first major step in building a medical career, after they graduate in May.
Across the nation on the same date – the third Friday in March – at the same time (1 p.m. Eastern time), sealed envelopes containing letters announcing where they will go for their residency training are distributed to the students at “Match Day” ceremonies attended by excited family members and friends.
