Dr. Hypes grew up in Ohio and attended The Ohio State University for his bachelor’s degree and combined MD/MPH. During residency at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit Michigan he became interested in critical care medicine and came to University of Arizona for a fellowship in Critical Care Medicine.

Following fellowship Dr. Hypes joined faculty here at University of Arizona and practices both Emergency Medicine and Critical Care. His critical care practice is predominantly in the medical and neurosciences ICUs.  His research interests include airway management, respiratory failure, sepsis, cardiac arrest and clinical trials spanning the ED to ICU transition. He serves as local PI for studies from the PETAL and SIREN research networks has participated in a number of COVID-19 related clinical trials.

He spends his free time traveling, SCUBA diving, and spending time with his family.
