To advance the education of third year medical students as it pertains to the specialty of emergency and acute care medicine.
This elective provides specific didactic training on emergency medicine specific topics including: pediatrics, splinting, chest pain, EKG lab, simulation labs, focused assessment with sonography in trauma, eye lab, pharmacy, suture lab, abdominal pain, and trauma. Students will gain valuable on shift experience working with emergency medicine staff, residents, fellows and attendings.The goal is to expose third year students to both adult and pediatric emergency medicine patients to develop skills pertaining to history and physical exam, differential diagnosis, appropriate workup and evaluation of patients.To expose students to basic procedures in adult and pediatric emergency medicine such as laceration repair and orthopedic procedures.
Students will conduct brief literature review utilizing Arizona Health Sciences Library Clinical Emergency Medicine Evidence Based Medicine Search Engine on topic of interest. Provide 1 page synopsis on the topic and how it pertains to the field of emergency medicine.
Students will also be evaluated on 11 shifts in the Emergency Department. A final exam is optional.
