Why you should consider the South Campus Residency

Why would you want to be a resident here?

The University of Arizona Department of Emergency Medicine offers a three-year emergency medicine residency program in a truly unique setting - a community hospital set in an academic institution. This environment located at Banner - University Medical Center South is core to our mission: To develop excellent leaders in Emergency Medicine by immersing our residents in an intellectually stimulating, culturally fulfilling, diverse, and compassionate environment.

As a student or resident in the Southwest, you will be immersed in a multicultural experience unlike any other, as we treat a high volume of patients from the Hispanic and Native American cultures. Our diverse curriculum focuses on Rural, Border, and Global Medicine and includes medical Spanish language immersion.

Residents in the University of Arizona South Campus Residency Program have the unparalleled opportunity to provide first-line care for diverse populations of a rural, inner-city, indigent, and multicultural people under the supervision of nationally recognized faculty. Our residents receive specialized training in sports medicine, toxicology, emergency ultrasound, neonatal resuscitation, palliative care, addiction medicine, and rural, border, and global health medicine.

Our small-sized program fosters a close-knit, team environment where residents are surrounded by friendly, approachable faculty who love to teach. This supportive environment allows residents to thrive and to quickly foster independence and is centered on resident wellness.

Our faculty members are all board-certified, nationally known University of Arizona physicians and include experts in Emergency Ultrasound, Medical Toxicology, Sports Medicine, EMS, Research, Critical Care, Medical Simulation, Palliative Medicine, Addiction Medicine, and Disaster Preparedness. More than half are certified in EM subspecialties or other specialties. We have a strong commitment to resident and student education and resident-led research. Residents participate in a novel three-year, evidence-based medical research curriculum called ScholarQuest, where they develop and conduct a research project culminating with a scholarly presentation.

In a constant effort to treat the underserved population in Tucson, we completed our new state-of-the-art emergency department in August 2011. It has 60+ beds, a dedicated secure psychiatric unit, and ten high-acuity resuscitation rooms, allowing us to provide a high level of service to the ever-expanding south side of Tucson.
