UA at University Campus Residency - Class of 2022

Paul Castle, MD
Stony Brook University School of Medicine

Where are you from?

Originally Northern Michigan, then spent time in Montana prior to medical school (i.e. I don’t hate snow).

What are your personal interests/hobbies?

Anything outdoors. I love to bike, run, backpack, and ski. Throw in some nights cooking and playing cards and I’m a happy man.

What are your professional interests?

Global Health, Infectious Diseases, and Wilderness Medicine

Why did you choose UA EM?

When I interviewed, I was immediately struck by how friendly and welcoming everyone was. I flew home, and told my fiancée that she had to like the program. Luckily, her interview day with the vascular surgery program was just as wonderful! During my interview day, I was also convinced that UA would provide me an excellent place to train and become the best physician I can be. Finally, there are lots of mountains and outdoor access in Tucson!

What's your ideal vacation?

Anywhere with lots of time outside and some chances to try unique food.

What are your non-medical goals during residency?

Spend as much time outdoors as possible enjoying the AZ mountains and desert with my fiancée. And still manage to ski a couple times a year!

Martin Cisneroz, MD, MPH
University of Arizona College of Medicine

Where are you from?

Born and raised in Phoenix, AZ, I graduated from Sunnyslope High School and moved to Tucson to attend UA. I’ve now spent enough time in The Old Pueblo to consider myself a T-Loc lifer.

What are your personal interests/hobbies?

If I’m not on a road trip with my wife and dog, you’ll find me either mountain biking the local Tucson cross-country trails, capturing landscape photos, drinking wine in Sonoita, or at a UA sporting event. Bear Down!

What are your professional interests?

Currently, my professional interests include medical education (both undergraduate and GME), out-of-hospital resuscitation, and sports medicine. I did spend a month with the UA ultrasound team and loved it! I also have a background in search and rescue, and I would like to further explore this area while at the UA.

Why did you choose UA EM?

It takes a village to be admitted and to get through medical school. I had so much Tucson support from my family, friends, and amazing mentors in my goal to be an EM doc. Choosing the UA for my residency training was the easiest decision I made as a 4th year medical student. The training is dynamic and robust, the faculty are approachable and sincere, and the UA environment is where I’d like my career to continue to grow.

What's your ideal vacation?

My wife and I built our relationship around epic road trips. I think we would love to try for Glacier National Park hopefully in the next year or two. Of course, my vacations don’t need to be as adventurous. I also enjoy a taco, cerveza, and a nice quiet beach in Mexico.

What are your non-medical goals during residency?

First and foremost, I hope to remain a supportive husband, brother, son, and friend during residency. Beyond that, I would really love to learn how to fly fish, dabble in video editing, and attempt to read a book that isn’t about medicine.

Tyrel Fisher, MD

What are your personal interests/hobbies?

Hammocking, hiking, skiing, hunting, fishing, reading, guitar shredding

What are your professional interests?

Why did you choose UA EM?

I had never been to Tucson prior to the interview; however, before the flight even landed, I knew it was where I wanted to be. I was really hoping I liked the people, and luckily, they were my favorite on the interview trail.

What's your ideal vacation?

Currently a toss up between Mustafar or Mordor

What are your non-medical goals during residency?

Learn to climb, mountain bike, and hike uphill without breathing heavy

Jaime French, DO

Why did you choose UA EM?

The residents I met during my interview were a huge reason I chose this program! The environment was incredibly supportive. I was also drawn by the patient population.

What's your ideal vacation?

Actually, as I am typing this I am on my way to Greece! My husband and I plan on exploring the islands but also taking some time to relax by the pool and take in the sites around us! I am particularly excited about hiking the volcano in Santorini!

What are your non-medical goals during residency?

I definitely want to explore all that Tucson has to offer. I would also like to try to take a trip to a new city...or better yet country...every year! It is also important to me to spend time with my husband and pup.

Brandon Godfrey, MD
University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine

Where are you from?

Las Vegas, NV

What are your personal interests/hobbies?

I am very big into sports. I enjoy playing basketball, football, golf, skiing and running. I'm always up for any competitive sport/activity at any time though. My wife and I enjoy traveling together, going to movies and eating great food.

What are your professional interests?

Sports Medicine and Ultrasound.

Why did you choose UA EM?

UA EM had everything I was looking for in a program. I wanted to attend a 3 year University program with subspecialty tracks offered during residency and possible fellowships that I think I may want to pursue. The people I met on my interview day were great and I felt like it would be a great fit for me and my family. My wife and I were very familiar with Arizona after working here for a few years prior to starting residency so we felt right at home.

What's your ideal vacation?

I like going to places with a lot of history to explore. We usually alternate a vacation to a place with loads of history and then a place with a beach and lots of sun.

What are your non-medical goals during residency?

Be able to hold a semi-intelligible conversation en espanol. Run the marathon down Mt. Lemmon and crush my prior marathon times without destroying my knees. Be present as much as possible for my wife and kids.

Derek Hatfield, MD
University of Maryland School of Medicine

Where are you from?

San Diego, CA

What are your personal interests/hobbies?

Contrary to popular opinion, not everyone from San Diego is a great surfer. I do, however, love to play beach (or indoor) volleyball when I have time. I also really enjoy hiking and exploring new areas and would consider myself a little bit of a craft beer snob. Country music is my jam, so don't be surprised to find me at a country concert from time to time.

What are your professional interests?

Sports Medicine and EM Ultrasound

Why did you choose UA EM?

Having spent the last 8 years in Baltimore, it was time to make my way back west. During the interview circuit, I felt that all the faculty I met truly cared about the residents’ growth and well-being. Additionally, the ED at UA sees a large underserved patient population at both county and academic sites, and the residents all seem to have fun together and get along super well.

What's your ideal vacation?

My ideal vacation is anywhere with close friends. Whether it’s exploring a new country where I don’t speak the language or sitting on the beach with a cold one, it’s the people who really make the vacation.

What are your non-medical goals during residency?

When I have time outside the hospital, I’d love to go explore all the amazing hiking around Arizona, learn how to really rock climb, and learn how to make a California burrito from scratch (tortilla, carne asada, salsa verde, guac, pico, etc). I’d also love to give brewing my own beer a shot and try not to poison anyone in the process. Lastly, I’m hoping to get more into road biking.

Michelle Howe, MD

Where are you from?

Phoenix, AZ

What are your personal interests/hobbies?

Dancing, trying new foods, cooking, traveling, foreign films, volleyball.

What are your professional interests?

Global Health, Disaster Medicine, Social EM

Why did you choose UA EM?

Not to sound annoyingly vague, but I felt like I fit in with the people when I did my away rotation. Also, I think that the mix of academic, community, and county experiences will prepare me well for whatever I choose to pursue after residency. And lastly, I like to joke that I'm solar-powered, so the weather is a nice added bonus.

What's your ideal vacation?

Somewhere where I haven't been before with good food and natural beauty.

Explore Tucson and all it has to offer, try cooking new foods, adopt a dog.

Ashley Lutrick, DO
A.T. Still University - Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine

Where are you from?

I am an Iowa native from the big city of Norwalk, Iowa.

What are your personal interests/hobbies?

I am an adventurous soul! I love traveling, exploring culture, making new friends, eating all the foods, embracing Mother Nature's gifts via hiking/backpacking, and of course, discovering good wines and beers! I also enjoy sports and am slightly an adrenaline junky. But my number one hobby is spending time with my big family (see photo), boyfriend, friends and pets. So whenever I'm doing any of the above, I always have company. :)

What are your professional interests?

International Medicine & Wilderness Medicine

Why did you choose UA EM?

One word, with two meanings: Family. Though I'm a small town Iowa gal, my family moved to Phoenix 6 years ago. Training at a solid program where I could remain close was really important to me. When I attended my interview at UofA it was overwhelming how at home I felt. The residents and staff were so easy to talk to, supportive, and enthusiastic. I knew immediately I found a new family, and they welcomed me with open arms.

What's your ideal vacation?

Backpacking through a forested mountain range filled with wildlife. Ideally, there's also a beautiful lake and a few waterfalls sprinkled along the way. Then maybe there's also access to an ocean where we can snorkel colorful reefs, eat fresh seafood and enjoy tropical cocktails with the locals.

What are your non-medical goals during residency?

I am determined to become fluent in Spanish!

Travis Martin, MD
University of Nebraska College of Medicine

Where are you from?

Born and Raised in Southern California. The military sent me out to the Midwest in 2009, and eventually I completed Medical School in 2019 from the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

What are your personal interests/hobbies?

Hiking, camping, board games, traveling the world, and anything with my dogs. I enjoy getting out of my house and trying new things as much as I can.

I also enjoy cooking, and consider myself a bit of an amateur Grillmaster.

What are your professional interests?

Veteran Care and Outreach, Sports Medicine, and Global Health

Why did you choose UA EM?

My primary goal on the interview trail was to find a program that felt like family. As a military veteran, I became accustomed to the tight knit camaraderie that I formed with my coworkers overseas. From the beginning of my interview day at UA, I felt like I'd found that again. Everyone was so comfortable, respectful, and just seemed to have fun. I saw wellness and people that seemed to thoroughly enjoy each others company! To me UA felt like somewhere I could call home. However, if that wasn't enough, I soon fell in love with the opportunities that the program offered. It was a rarity to find such a large and diverse patient population that offered multiple training sites to give you a touch of everything in a 3-year program. Lastly, Tucson is just plain awesome.

What's your ideal vacation?

Me and 3 or 4 of my closest friends backpacking across a national park. And of course my dogs are invited.

What are your non-medical goals during residency?

Try to have time for a few home-cooked meals a week, keep in touch with my family and friends as best I can, and keep my dogs as happy as possible.

Ali Shihab, MD
University of Arizona College of Medicine

Where are you from?

I am originally from Phoenix, Arizona, but I spent the last 10 years in Tucson doing my undergraduate and medical school studying.

What are your personal interests/hobbies?

My hobbies include listening to and reading books, hiking, rock climbing, weight lifting, and traveling.

What are your professional interests?

I am still undecided on what kind of emergency medicine I will practice. I think I will probably start with emergency medicine in the community for a few years and then eventually start working in an academic emergency medicine department.

Why did you choose UA EM?

There are many reasons why I chose UA EM. Most importantly is my co-residents. I had an amazing time working with many of the UA residents during my EM-Critical care rotation and EM sub-I rotation in which I was able to develop friendship with many of the residents during that short period of time. I also enjoy the patient population diversity and the level of acuity that the UA EM department experiences.

What's your ideal vacation?

Ideal vacation would probably be backpacking through different European capitals for a few weeks.

What are your non-medical goals during residency?

Some of my non-medical goals include traveling and learning Spanish.

Why did you choose UA EM?

Born and raised in the great state of Arizona, I already knew this place was the promised land to live. Hmm… so many options to choose from. I like to mix it up. I enjoy everything from vibrant cities to quiet off the beaten track towns. Some prior trips meant living out of a backpack for weeks and others came with room service. I’m not sure what’s next, but it’ll definitely mean getting a new pin in my map of the world.

What are your non-medical goals during residency?

Learn more Spanish, add at least another few pins to my map of the world, keep my wife happy, and get a better handle on this whole “dad” thing.

I did an away rotation here and loved it. The residents and faculty were great and always eager to teach. The facilities for both main and south campus are amazing and I loved the unique combination of rotating at both. Even the interviews were casual and really made me appreciate how the program felt like a great fit for me. I loved the city of Tucson when I did my undergrad here and am glad for the opportunity to return.

My ideal vacation would be anywhere I could explore the history and foods of someplace new and also find beautiful outdoor locations to go hike and climb with my wife.

What are your non-medical goals during residency?

I hope to keep having fun in Tucson exploring the outdoors with my dog and wife and trying new foods and trying to learn a bit more Spanish.
