Why did you choose UA EM?

I heard great things about the program and Dr. Stoneking. Even though my interview was on Zoom, I could tell UA South had a supportive environment with excellent training.  I loved the idea of having a smaller class in a community hospital with close ties to an academic center. With an interest in rural, global, and border medicine, I knew this would be a great fit!

So much outdoor activity in such short distances!

What are your non-medical goals during residency?

Learn Spanish, convert a school bus into a small home on wheels, keep practicing yoga and reading non-medical books.

Why did you choose UA EM?

The UA programs in general have such a family feel and you always know you’re a part of a solid team that wants you to succeed. I love the patient population at South campus in particular and the way it has more of a community EM feel. You meet so many interesting people with diverse pathology and really get to take ownership of their care!

Favorite activity in Tucson, or what attracted you to Tucson besides the residency program?

Tucson is an awesome city with lots of fun things to do from outdoor activities like camping to attractions like Reid Park Zoo and the Children’s Museum.  Not to mention it has a phenomenal food scene.  Along with nearby Cochise county, it’s also home for us!  All our family is close by and we adore the area.  My in-laws have a nearby farm, where my son is looking forward to investing in chickens to keep his current family of ducks company!

What are your non-medical goals during residency?

Improve my cake baking skills and spend time with family.

What are your personal interests/hobbies?

Anything going uphill and back down: skiing, mountain biking, rock climbing, trail running with the pup, and surfing.  I love traveling the world by bicycle, meeting weird people, eating snacks in cool places, getting stuck in storms, and dancing around the fire with friends and family.

What are your professional interests?

Medical education, wilderness medicine, and sports medicine.

Why did you choose UA EM?

I was looking for a program that combines community/county and academic environments, sees a significant volume of underserved and Spanish-speaking patients, has opportunities for subspecialty tracts, and has a supportive and fun group of faculty and residents. I loved the family feel of a smaller program with unopposed learning opportunities that is part of a large academic program and Dr. Stoneking as PD sealed the deal! Training in a location with good access to mountains and trails was essential, so UA EM was the perfect fit for all the above. Plus- my wife, Leanne, is starting veterinary school in Tucson at the same time, so heading down for some SW desert sun seemed like the perfect choice.

Favorite activity in Tucson, or what attracted you to Tucson besides the residency program?

Endless single-track, awesome climbing, ability to bicycle commute, a smaller and affordable big city, and a unique SW vibe.

What are your non-medical goals during residency?

Race mountain bikes, break into a new climbing grade, have a garden, make lots of great friends, have lots of dinner parties, and still get some skiing in. Also, learn how to survive in 110+ degrees.

Spencer Rushton, DO
Kansas City University of Medicine & Biosciences College of Osteopathic Medicine

Where are you from?

Murrieta, California

What are your personal interests/hobbies?

Running (ultramarathons), cycling, rock-climbing, Nordic skiing (obviously opportunities are sparse in this dessert paradise), baking (especially sourdough bread), music (I play guitar, piano, banjo, and sing), reading/audiobooks (I'm a sucker for a good sci-fi book or biography).

What are your professional interests?

Global Health, Sports Medicine, Medical Technology innovations.

Why did you choose UA EM?

From the time I began medical school, I have heard amazing things about the program, people, and community. After talking to the residents here, learning about the program and faculty during my interview, I knew my wife, my baby girl, and I would love it here. I'm also a fluent Spanish speaker and have done a lot of work with Latin communities in the US, as well as in South America. The commitment of the residency to focus on Spanish and serving the Hispanic and Native American communities had significant appeal to me.

Favorite activity in Tucson, or what attracted you to Tucson besides the residency program?

Being from Southern California, the dessert always has felt like home. You can't beat the outdoor activities in Tucson either. My wife and I are stoked to hit the trails here and soak up the sun. Oh, and you can't leave out the awesome food scene here, too. I'm excited to eat my weight in tacos.

What are your non-medical goals during residency?

Get on the Great British Baking Show, get a puppy, be the best husband and dad I can be, explore the desert and run some ultras with minimal cactus attacks, help my wife beat her Indiana Jones-like fear of snakes.

Why did you choose UA EM?

The residents were kind, happy, and clearly connected on interview day. I had heard only positives about why residents love the program, the location, the faculty, and the department. Tucson is also my favorite city to explore, hike, and eat!

Favorite activity in Tucson, or what attracted you to Tucson besides the residency program?

The trails for running, mountain biking, and hiking are beautiful. Nothing beats walking throughout the saguaros at sunset!

What are your non-medical goals during residency?

Run a half marathon, better my Spanish, and emphasize time with family and friends.
