PLEASE NOTE: IN YOUR SECOND YEAR, YOU MUST CONTACT STUDENT AFFAIRS TO ENROLL IN EMD 880A. YOU WILL NOT BE PERMITTED TO ENROLL IN FIRST YEAR, BUT MAY LOG WORK FOR CREDIT.
Students will participate in the activities of this elective in years 1 and 2 of their medical education. They will be required to complete the hours of contact time dedicated to the activities of this elective; *(Optional) CPR Instructor Certification Course, 15 hours of time teaching CPR to the general public, 2 skills labs, attend or view all scheduled didactic sessions.
*The CPR Instructor Certification Course is optional and NOT required. Note that certain venues require certification before you can teach.
In year 1, you have the option to become certified as a CPR instructor. You may do this via the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross. This can be facilitated by the Resuscitation Education Student Group.
In year 1, teach classes toward the 15 hours
You will be responsible for documenting your teaching credits by using the CPR Online Instruction Log.
Faculty from the Arizona CPR Research Group, the Sarver Heart Center, the Arizona Emergency Medicine Research Center, Pediatric Intensive Care, American Heart Association, and American Red Cross will present didactic sessions at NOON in Room 3117. These are announced on the listserv and are noted on this website. The Didactic Sessions Calendar will be posted on the CPR Elective web site. Bring your lunch! If you miss a session in person you may view it in the library or via Podcast at the link above the calendar.
You will be required to attend the 2 skills labs during EMD 880A for supervised time to practice resuscitative skills. These will be scheduled throughout the year and dates are available on the Didactic Sessions Calendar which will be posted on the website.
Students who successfully complete EMD 880A will advance to EMD 880B for registration in their 4th year of medical school. If you do not complete the 15 hours of contact time in medical school years 1 and 2 you may continue the hours of contact with the public during years 3 and 4 to complete the total of 35 hours for the entire EMD 880A and EMD 880B course. You will be advanced from EMD 880A to EMD 880B if you have been logging work. The course director will complete a qualitative evaluation of each student's performance at the end of the course in 4th year, prior to graduation, for your final grade.
