UA at University Campus Residency - Class of 2021

Brittany Arcaris, MD

The University of Arizona College of Medicine - Tucson

Where are you from?

Vista, California.

What are your personal interests/hobbies?

Not trying to sound like an EM stereotype, but here it goes: wakeboarding, SUP, backpacking, riding dirt bikes, triathlon, mountain biking, climbing, discovering new microbreweries, coffee, yelling while watching professional sports (mostly NFL and NHL), and petting as many doggos as possible.

What are your professional interests?

Wilderness medicine, medical education, and critical care.

Why did you choose UA EM?

Awesome faculty and residents, tons of great pathology to learn from, easy access to the outdoors, and Tucson's really cool firefighters (my fiance the firefighter made me say that).

What's your ideal vacation?

Really anywhere with a large body of water to get out on.

What are your non-medical goals during residency?

Get good enough on the mountain bike to conquer Lemmon Drop (and not cry), finally learn some Spanish, and as previously mentioned, pet as many dogs as possible.

Ryan Bosler, MD

University of Washington School of Medicine

Where are you from?

Seattle, Washington.

What are your personal interests/hobbies?

I am passionate about sailing, sea-kayaking and skiing. Now that I am desert bound, I am excited to focus on mountain biking and exploring the Southwest.

Why did you choose UA EM?

I wanted a program that provided me with strong clinical training, stellar faculty, and most importantly, a solid group of residents.

What's your ideal vacation?

Heading out on the water or into the mountains with good friends.

What are your non-medical goals during residency?

Avoiding the ER while mountain biking and exploring a region that is brand new to me. I also would like to become the opposite of a scorpion-whisperer, because I’m pretty sure I don’t like those things even though I haven’t met any yet.

I really enjoy visiting big cities with good outdoor day trips I can check out, and connecting with the locals over their best local stout or porter recommendations.

What are your non-medical goals during residency?

During residency I’d like to continue working on fitness goals, find the best cold brew and tacos in Tucson, craft my own mole sauce, and make it onto the Ellen Show.

Francisco Canales, MD

Why did you choose UA EM?

I rotated here and quickly noticed that the facilities, faculty, residents, and patient population create an awesome environment for EM training. Also, Tucson is a great city with a unique borderland vibe.

What's your ideal vacation?

Lounging in Florence, Italy with my wife. Enjoying gelato during morning walks around the Duomo and over Ponte Vecchio. Picking up prosciutto, pancetta, and various other meats, cheeses, and artisan breads from the market to have for lunch. Taking cooking classes, visiting wineries, and enjoying all the awesome Tuscan food. I pretty much want to spend a few weeks walking, eating, walking some more, and then eating some more.

What are your non-medical goals during residency?

To vacation in Florence (and a few other places), expand my cooking repertoire, get swole, become a father, and enjoy life with my wife.

UA EM is an all around great program and a great fit for me. I like the critical care emphasis, the awesome people, the great location near the mountains and the great cost of living in Tucson. I couldn't have asked for a better program!

Somewhere warm, where I can go to the beach, go hiking and exploring, and eat great food!

Why did you choose UA EM?

Because the people in Tucson are the finest, friendliest people and AZ winters are unspeakably beautiful. Also, the food. Guys... the food.

What's your ideal vacation?

Going to a cabin in woodsy mountains with my wife with good books, good coffee and good trails to explore.

What are your non-medical goals during residency?

Have an even better relationship with my wife than when I started residency. Raise our children into decent human beings. Have another kid. Take up carpentry and learn how to put shelves on plaster walls.

What are your personal interests/hobbies?

Basketball, rock climbing, hiking/trail running with my dog, football, baseball, racquetball, yoga, kayaking...really anything that will get my blood flowing I'm into it. Also going into an In-N-Out induced food coma because adults are allowed to make bad life decisions sometimes.

What are your professional interests?

Sports medicine, and ultrasound.

Why did you choose UA EM?

As an MS4 my checklist of what I wanted in a program was formed by what I saw here, so when no other programs hit on everything I cared about like UA EM did I realized I was looking around for what was already right in front of me. Most importantly though, the people here are normal and enjoy life while working incredibly hard to be the best EM doctors possible.

What's your ideal vacation?

I love doing anything that involves being with the people I care about most. Whether that's adventuring in the backwoods or doing 12 oz curls on a beach, as long as I have the right people by my side I'm happy.

What are your non-medical goals during residency?

Finally get into mountain biking.

Jamie Resnick, MD

Wake Forest University School of Medicine

All over! But I spent most of my childhood in Los Alamos, New Mexico.

What are your personal interests/hobbies?

Eating, sleeping, socializing, and being outdoors. Activities that combine those interests are my favorite! So you can usually find me camping, hiking, backpacking, whitewater boating, skiing, playing sports, dancing or cooking with a group friends or loved ones.

What are your professional interests?

Right now I am interested in sports, wilderness, and disaster/tactical medicine.

Why did you choose UA EM?

The people I met on interview day and continue to meet living here. They have an obvious passion for their field and are so excited to share it with you. And Tucson is freaking gorgeous and has so much to do outside!

What's your ideal vacation?

Backpacking or whitewater boating somewhere beautiful. Preferably with people I love and well outside of cellphone signal.

What are your non-medical goals during residency?

Make amazing friendships. Have lots of dinner parties filled with laughter. Get better at climbing and mountain biking. Learn new sports. Snuggle my dog often.

What are your professional interests?

EMS, Sports Med, and administration.

Why did you choose UA EM?

The UA EM program is essentially the complete package and where I knew I would be the happiest. UA was the interview where the people and program culture stood out the most. The residents are engaging, fun, and interesting. The program boasts a great reputation due to amazing faculty committed to resident education, a comprehensive curriculum, and numerous fellowship opportunities. There is emphasis on resident support and wellness. The balance between the University and South campus offers unique and diversified patient experiences. Oh, and most importantly, a food allowance! Beyond the program, if you can handle (and ideally, embrace) the heat, there is so much to love about Arizona, Tucson, the Sonoran desert and outdoor opportunities, and southwest culture as a whole. Finally, I couldn't beat being home with family and friends, and becoming a Wildcat again was a major perk.

What's your ideal vacation?

Anywhere a bit off the beaten path that has a blend of history/art/architecture, a balance between mountains and beaches, great food and drink, and of course, world-class climbing. Next on the list is climbing the Mediterranean coast from France to Greece, or simply exploring more of America's national parks.

What are your non-medical goals during residency?

Break into a new climbing grade, establish and record the first ascent on a new route on Mt. Lemmon, road bike to the summit of Mt. Lemmon, adopt and train the ultimate outdoor pup, experiment more with cooking, learn to play guitar (did someone say Wonderwall?), and improve my Spanish.

Wilderness medicine and global health. I rotated in Zimbabwe and Uganda during medical school.

Why did you choose UA EM?

Honestly it was the people. I knew Tucson would be great for my quality of life and training: good food, great wilderness, incredible beer, and top notch residency program. But the people just blew me away. As soon as I sat down with the residents I knew they were my people.

What's your ideal vacation?

Hut to hut mountain biking trip through the French and Swiss Alps. Nothing but some protein bars and water on your back, incredible single track, and with beers and brats waiting for you at the end of the trail.

What are your non-medical goals during residency?

Learn how to keep bees, re-discover rock climbing, mountain bike as much as possible, and enjoy time with close friends and family in the time in-between.

Jay Yim, DO

Western University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific - Pomona Campus

Where are you from?

Phoenix, Arizona.

What are your personal interests/hobbies?

I enjoy pretty much anything outdoors, including running and hiking – for which Tucson’s great! Lately, I’ve also been getting into yoga to relax. Some other interests include figure drawing, attending concerts, travelling, eating everything, and playing video games.

What are your professional interests?

Medical education, critical care, and healthcare disparities.

Why did you choose UA EM?

There were a great number of reasons: friendly people, excellent training, combination of university and county-style experiences, fellowship expertise (faculty-trained and programs available), fantastic quality of living (weather and traffic), and distance to family. I remember rotating in the department and knowing that I wanted to be here.

What's your ideal vacation?

Spending a few days outdoors and relaxing with some good people.

What are your non-medical goals during residency?

I’m hoping to improve my running times, to read more recreationally, and to make some great memories and friends (and maybe to get past 90 degrees doing a seated forward bend).
