Why did you choose UA EM?

I did a rotation here as an MS4 and felt right at home from the first day. The attendings were approachable and cordial. The residents were well rounded and collaborative. I felt that the complimentary affiliation with both an academic medical center and a community/county hospital would provide me with a thorough training that would prepare me for anything. Finally, for my family, Tucson has the perfect blend of family support, city entertainment, and south-western charm.

A backcountry hunting or fishing trip with my Dad.

What are your non-medical goals during residency?

Why did you choose UA EM?

I went to medical school just up north at the UA Phoenix, so I was familiar with the program and the reputation it has in the region. I love that the shifts are 9 hours, that each month is a mix of Main Campus, South Campus and Peds shifts. The people I met on my interview day seemed very relaxed, very competent and genuinely normal.

Sunshine! Seriously though after doing a handful of east coast interviews in the winter sunshine became more and more of a factor.

What's your ideal vacation?

Going on an adventure somewhere with people I care about. Beach, city, or mountains don't matter as much as the people I'm going with. But I do love to just float at the beach…

Everything science fiction! I'm a huge geek, I like reading about new technology and techie gadgets. Love being outdoors and hiking, SCUBA diving and snow sports whenever possible. My wife and I enjoy taking trips to Ocean Beach in San Diego with our dogs to play on the beach. I've recently gotten into sketching still life (though, I'm a very untalented artist) and I'm trying to get back into climbing shape. Last, but definitely not least, I try to practice mindfulness and meditate regularly.

What are your professional interests?

Doing my best to provide compassionate care to all my patients and really being present during my interactions with patients and on shift. My current trajectory is likely community EM, though I love learning about and playing with ultrasound. I think it's such a diverse, useful tool.

Why did you choose UA EM?

My family really grew to love Tucson during medical school and the program here is excellent. I couldn't bear to leave after meshing so well with all the residents and faculty in the ED. Plus the program is freakin' awesome!

Exploring something new, be it a seedy bar in a back alley in Tokyo or a new hike in the wilderness. One way or another usually craft beer is involved.

What are your non-medical goals during residency?

Improve my Spanish to make it passable. Find the best places around Tucson to climb, bike and eat. Avoid terrible sunburn or a biking faceplant into a cactus.

Why did you choose UA EM?

UA is an awesome program in that it provides experiences at both a busy level 1 trauma center and a county/community hospital that sees a lot of underserved patients.  The program has a great reputation for training and producing well-prepared EM physicians that find jobs all over the country, and the staff is extremely supportive of both educational and personal goals.

Putting everything I need to live in a backpack, turning off my cell phone, and exploring some mountains and towns in countries I’ve never been to before.

What are your non-medical goals during residency?

My main goals for time outside the hospital are to become as familiar as possible with every mountain bike trail in the Tucson area, hide my skis from myself in my apartment so well that I forget they’re there, and compile a list of the top 10 most solid taquerias Tucson has to offer.

Garry Winkler, MD

Garry Winkler, MD

University of Texas School of Medicine at San Antonio

Where are you from?

I say that I am from San Antonio. It is a city that stole my heart and ran away with it, while spending undergrad and medical school there. In fact I bleed Salsa now. True fact. That being said, I was raised in Carrollton, Texas (Dallas ish) and spent my entire youth there.

What are your personal interests/hobbies?

I take care of my dog (Annie, the Sassy Latina Princess) and try to be her best friend and companion possible. That generally means taking here where ever I go that she is allowed. Beyond that I love exploring new breweries, drinking craft beer, playing video games, eating good food, binging on Hulu/Netflix, and cooking to my heart's content.

What are your professional interests?

Education and LGBT advocacy/patient care.

Why did you choose UA EM?

The desert beckons you in! But really, the people here are fantastic, the program checked off every single one of my "boxes", and I felt like I belonged here on interview day. Also, Tucson has a weird and bohemian streak that reminds me of home (San Antonio), Tucson is UNESCO World City of Gastronomy, and I realized I didn't like cold winters after doing a surgical intern year in Boston.

What's your ideal vacation?

Traveling to a foreign country where I can eat good food, drink well, and see beautiful sights. Be immersed in the culture and wonder wherever I go.

What are your non-medical goals during residency?

Further expand my cooking and baking ability, start catching up on comic book reading (eg Spiderman, X-Men, Deadpool), get a six pack (okay, I will settle for a 2 pack), catch up on my videogame backlog, and explore Tucson to its full extent.
